This place is already world famous for being the origin of one of holiest rivers in India, Ganga. It is also one of the four char dham pilgrimage site and is an important place of faith and devotion. History of Ganga turning into a river to wash the sins of king Bhagirathi’s father is still discussed by the elders of the place. This place has a divine aura and is situated at 3042 m above the sea level which makes it even more alluring for the visitors. What adds to the serenity and sanctity of the place is the snow clad mountains alongside the crystal clear water of the Ganga. Most habitants are vegetarians as non-veg and drinks are prohibited.

The most famous and sought after place is the Gangotri temple which is dedicated to goddess Ganga and is the highest temple of its kind. Other attractions include the Nandanvan and Tapovan which were once used by sages to meditate in total peace. Near the meeting point of Jat ganga and Bhagirathi river lies the splendid Bhairon Ghati which has the famous Bhaironath temple surrounded by deep jungles. There is also a natural submerged shiv lingam in Gangotri.

The airport nearest to Gangotri is Jolly Grant airport which is 250kms away from it. airport is well linked with the area by roads and direct taxis to Gangotri are available. Nearest railways station is Rishikesh situated around 234 kms apart. Buses and taxis do regular round trips from station to Gangotri. NH108 connects the Gangotri area with mainstream highways and tour buses are available from major cities of Uttarakhand.

4. Gaumukh Glacier: Gaumukh, meaning "Cow's Mouth," is the terminus of the Gangotri Glacier and the actual source of the Ganges river. It's a challenging trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh, offering stunning views of the glacier and surrounding peaks.

5. Kedar Tal: An emerald glacial lake located around 18 kilometers from Gangotri, Kedar Tal is a popular trekking destination. The lake is surrounded by towering mountains, creating a breathtaking backdrop.

6. Tapovan: Another trekking destination, Tapovan offers panoramic views of several Himalayan peaks, including Shivling, Meru, and Bhagirathi.

7. Harsil: A picturesque village located about 25 kilometers from Gangotri, Harsil is known for its natural beauty and tranquility. The Bhagirathi River flows through the village, and it's a great place to experience the Himalayan lifestyle.

8. Mukhba Village: Mukhba is known for its ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagirathi, the personification of the Bhagirathi River.

- By Road: You can reach Uttarkashi by road from major cities like Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haridwar. These cities are well-connected to Uttarkashi by road, and you can hire taxis or use state-run buses. Gangotri is about 95 kilometers from Uttarkashi. You can hire a taxi or take a shared jeep from Uttarkashi to Gangotri. The road journey takes around 4 to 5 hours,

- By Air: The nearest airport to Uttarkashi is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From the airport, you'll need to continue your journey by road. After reaching Uttarkashi, you can continue your journey by local bus or car.
